MMU Graduate Marie Canning Ceramics

Marie Canning is a graduate of the Manchester Metropolitan University, where she studied 3D design. Marie has since set-up her own Ceramics studio space in Liverpool and is now going from strength to strength.

“My specialism is ceramics and I have developed and created a range of miniature sized porcelain vessels which I throw on the pottery wheel. I took my inspiration from the small Victorian eye ointment pots used in Victorian medicine and became interested in the herbal medicine used at that time. The continued use of herbal medicine and our interests in taking responsibility for our own health inspired me greatly.

Each little pot I throw is then lightly pressed with a herbal name and its number in production as a record of the making process. They are then decorated corresponding to the form of the herb they contain. I love the natural result of stoneware-fired porcelain, therefore I only glaze in small amounts using light blues, greens and corals. I add small amounts of gold and pearl lustre adding preciousness to the already intricate detail.

Some of the pots become functional vessels, others I create into wearables. Each piece is designed to be placed around your home or worn on your person as recognition of our strife to keep well and to act as a herbal charm.

I have been rather busy since graduating, I am currently exhibiting at 53 Degrees North in York and have just finished the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. I have upcoming exhibitions in Liverpool, Staffordshire and London and I am going to Denmark in January for the Artist in Residency program. It’s going to be a busy but fulfilling year.”
